A small shop vac with a long cord will usually do well as a double for a car vacuum cleaner, although when the Dustbuster folks came out with a battery operated hand vac, those were really popular car vacuums as well.

Attachments are nice, but the main attribute of a car vacuum is that it has to be able to suck up nearly anything: gravel, leaves, paper -- you name it. It should also be able to keep its suction power without clogging easily. A vacuum that quits if anything over the size of a Tic-Tac gets in it is just about useless.
