What Are the Different Types of Motorhome Accessories?

There are two types or classifications for motorhome accessories: internal, or inside of the motorhome, and external, or outside of the motorhome. Internal motorhome accessories can range from sound systems and lighting fixtures to colors and linens. External accessories can be engine performance add-ons and light packages or back-up cameras, wheel covers and awnings. The aftermarket is rife with accessories to aid any owner in creating a personalized motorhome that reflects the family's likes and interests. In the same manner as an owner would decorate his home, the individualization of a motorhome can be accomplished by visiting a motorhome dealer and looking at all of the decorative and performance options and add-ons.

Most motorhome accessories are intended to showcase the owner's personal likes and dislikes. By adding a special component to the motorhome, the owner is able to convey the spirit invoked by his vehicle. From curtains to custom upholstery, the interior of the vehicle is commonly one of the first areas to be personalized with custom motorhome accessories. The interior modifications are commonly visual and offer only a certain level of comfort for the passengers. The exterior motorhome accessories, however, commonly focus on safety, convenience and utilitarian functions. Awnings that can be pulled out to shade campers while the motorhome is parked are often one of the most frequent exterior modifications to the vehicle.

Increased lighting, towing components and bicycle carriers are popular motorhome accessories for the campers on the go with children. Some manufacturers even offer full-sized barbecue grills that mount to the motorhome's chassis and can be folded in or out to use or transport. A very popular item from the long list of motorhome accessories is the rear-view camera. This item allows the driver of the motorhome to see behind the vehicle through a dash-mounted monitor and a rearward-facing video camera. This camera provides visual confirmation of the condition of towed vehicles or trailers, backup visual aid and a myriad of other possibilities. These camera systems are also available with infrared capabilities, allowing use in the dark.

Generators are very popular motorhome accessories, with the owner often choosing to upgrade to a large generator. This upgrade allows for hours of uninterrupted electrical supply for items such as televisions, microwave ovens and lights. The primary reason, however, most owners choose to upgrade the generator is to power a larger air conditioning unit to keep the occupants comfortable in the heat of summer.
