An ATV cooler is a storage attachment that mounts to an ATV, or all terrain vehicle. The size and function of the ATV cooler can vary according to the rider's needs, but generally, the unit will mount behind the driver and will vary in size. Some coolers are large and can store a significant amount of food or other items that need to be kept cold, while others are smaller, lighter, and more compact. The units are usually made with a durable plastic or composite shell that can withstand impact, and the lid can be secured closed using latches.
Sometimes the ATV cooler will feature more than one compartment. An upper compartment can be used for dry storage of items that do not need to be kept cold, while a lower compartment can be used as a cooler for food and other items. This is done to allow more flexibility in storage options, since many ATV riders will be hauling gear in addition to items that need cold storage. The ATV cooler must therefore be multifunctional. If the driver will be accommodating a passenger, he or she will need to purchase an ATV cooler with a built-in seat; this configuration allows for cold storage without limiting available sitting space for the second rider.
The rear rack of the ATV will support the weight of the ATV cooler, which must be secured somehow to that rack so it does not shift or fall off during transport. Most coolers will feature some sort of security system to ensure the unit does not move. Latches built into the cooler shell will also ensure that the lid or lids do not come undone during transport, ensuring the safe storage of the contents. While the size of the unit can vary, most are large enough to cover the entire width of the ATV rack, which is useful not only for added storage, but also for ease of securing the box properly to the rack.
The cooler unit will add weight to the ATV, which means handling can be affected, though it should not be affected so much that the driver will be more likely to lose control of the vehicle. When driving the ATV, the driver should be careful to ensure the cooler does not strike any solid objects or shift during operation. For added safety, many coolers will feature reflectors to increase visibility for other riders.
